First, We Inspect the Rug Thoroughly
Before we touch a single fiber, we inspect the rug carefully. We’re looking at the construction, the fiber type, the dye stability, and any existing damage or staining. A silk rug from Providence, RI behaves very differently than a sisal runner from a home in East Greenwich, RI, and the cleaning method has to match. This step also lets us flag any repairs that might be needed, like fraying edges, moth damage, or unraveling ends, before we begin cleaning.

Pre-Treatment and Soil Testing
Next, we test a small area for colorfastness. Some dyes, especially in older oriental rugs or hand-knotted pieces, can bleed if the wrong solution is applied. We also check for any pre-existing stains that may need targeted pre-treatment before the main wash.
Dry soil removal comes before any wet cleaning. A rug can hold a surprising amount of dry particulate matter deep in its pile, and if you wet it down without removing that first, you’re essentially turning the dirt into mud. We use professional equipment to shake and beat that loose soil out of the rug properly.
The Actual Washing Process
This is where our on-site facility really makes a difference. Rugs are washed using methods appropriate to their fiber and construction. Fine fabrics like wool, linen, and cotton require a gentler approach than more durable synthetic materials. Leather-trimmed or delicate silk rugs need even more careful handling.

Proper rinsing is critical. Any cleaning solution left behind in the fibers can actually attract more soil over time, defeating the whole purpose. We rinse thoroughly and then move the rug into controlled drying. Drying too fast, or at the wrong temperature, can cause shrinkage or distortion in certain fibers. Drying too slowly creates conditions for mildew. We manage this carefully so the rug comes out fresh, clean, and in its proper shape.
Final Inspection and Any Needed Repairs
Once the rug is dry, we do a final inspection. If repairs were identified at the start, this is when our on-site rug repair shop handles them. We offer full-scale repair services, from re-fringing and binding to more involved structural work. Not many cleaning companies have this capability in-house, but it means we can return your rug in better condition than it arrived, not just cleaner.
